It’s that time of year again! Each spring, Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings hosts the Once Upon a Time “Challenge,” a reading event celebrating fantasy, folklore, and magic. This event has always been close to my heart, because when I first started blogging, it was the Once Upon a Time challenge that really made me feel like part of a larger community. And even though over the years I’ve become much more casual about my blogging, I try to make an effort to participate on whatever level I can. This year, I’m not going to be a part of any explicit challenges, but rather just make sure to link up any fantasy reviews on the Review Site, and see what interesting books others are reading.
Even though I never stick to them, part of the fun of doing this intro post is setting up a reading pool of books that I may choose from. Since my book collection is at least 50% fantasy, I may veer way off-track, but here are a few of the things I’ve been considering:
- Tower of Thorns by Juliet Marillier
- Something by Patricia McKillip, because her writing embodies what this challenge is all about
- Masks and Shadows by Stephanie Burgis
- Sabella by Tanith Lee, provided it turns out to be as fantasy as it is sci-fi
Are you participating in Once Upon a Time? What are you planning on reading?
