“Annihilation” by Jeff Vandermeer

Annihilation, the first book in Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy, is a horror/survival story in which mankind explores the site of a world-changing catastrophe. The premise reminds me a bit of Roadside Picnic in that there’s this zone where something seriously weird happened, and it changes the people who interact with it in mysterious ways. Read more

“The Winner’s Curse” by Marie Rutkoski

The Winner’s Curse is a dystopian fantasy novel set in a world that vaguely resembles ancient Rome, but with more ever-so-slightly more  gender equality and with fancier dresses (the cover pretty much sums it up).  Kestrel is a general’s daughter, and as such, she’s forced to choose to either join the military or get married. Read more
