Recipe: Kale Berry Smoothie

kale berry smoothie

Mike got me a little bullet-style blender for Christmas, and I’ve been on a smoothie kick ever since.  Smoothies with bananas and blueberries and pineapples and strawberries and yogurt and mango and …KALE!

Mike:  Did you just say you put kale in your smoothie?

Me:  Yep.  Delicious and nutritious!

Mike:  That is disgusting, never say that again.

Me:  …but it’s really tasty!

Mike:  Kale smoothies are a sin.

Me:  Sinfully delicious, you mean!

Mike:  The sin was to play at creation by creating a shake (something incredibly delicious) out of kale, a horrid choice of a vegetable.  By doing such we spat in the face of existence as we broke laws we scarcely understood!

Me:  Kale is not a horrid vegetable!

Mike:  But it is a horrid choice for a shake, and definitely a sin!

Sinfully Delicious Kale Smoothie

Note that I cook like an Eastern European grandmother, which means that if you like exact measurements and a standardized recipe that will be the same every time you make it, you should look elsewhere.

Step One: Pour a little bit of juice into the blender.  Around 1/4 of a cup or so, maybe a bit more.  You want to have enough liquid that the smoothie will blend.

Step Two:  Add a scoop of plain yogurt.  Also about 1/4 of a cup, give or take.

Step Three:  Add a couple handfuls of kale.

Step Four:  Add some frozen berries.  A generous handful should be sufficient, but you can add more or less to taste.  I used a frozen blend of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries.  You can buy fresh berries and freeze them, or just get the ones in the freezer section of your grocery store.

Step Five:  Make sure the lid is on and blend.  If you like ice in your smoothie, you can add some.  I personally don’t and prefer to use frozen fruits instead because ice in smoothies gives me brainfreeze.

Step Six:  Pour into a glass and serve.  Top with chia seeds if desired.

  1. Don’t tell Mike, but I actually like kale and put it in smoothies. Just yesterday, I made kale popcorn. He would flip his lid.
